Abstract
This work is part of a research project that aims to identify the management control systems (MCS) used by companies in the knowledge-based economy, in order to investigate the use that managers make of them to promote innovation strategies and at the same time, manage sustainable organizations. Previous literature on MCS has shown that they play an important role in organizations and have positive effects on performance through the information and feedback they produce. As important as their design is the style of the use that organizational actors make of them. First, this essay addresses the analysis of predominant theoretical frameworks to study the use of MCS: on the one hand, the Adler and Borys typology and, on the other, the Simons levers of control (LOC) framework. Second, the LOC framework is selected based on the fact that it is based on managerial levels and strategic decisions, which is the intended area of study. Several investigations address the use of this framework as an engine of innovation, a key factor for the organizations to be studied, and support Simons' contributions to sustainable management.
