Abstract

In a professional context in which the field of accounting is constantly being reshaped by contemporary technological transformations, including the automation of tasks and processes, data analytics tools and various applications of artificial intelligence, university education, and accounting education in particular, face the challenge of revising their content and innovating their methods. This is necessary in order to design meaningful and motivating learning experiences that can address the complexity of contemporary professional practice. Drawing on real-world educational innovation, this essay reflects on the value of multimedia case studies as a teaching strategy. Building on the fundamentals of the traditional case method, this approach leverages digital technologies to recreate professional scenarios through the deliberate presentation of a problem-based narrative in multimedia format, incorporating resources in multiple languages, actors, and sources of information. This approach immerses students in a professional situation in which they must identify tensions and competing interests, request and analyse data, and take an active role. Implementing this approach has had a positive impact on conceptual understanding, analytical skills, digital competencies and professional identity development.
